“The world is not an unsolved problem for scientists or sociologists. The world is a living mystery: our birth, our death, our being in the moment – these are mysteries. They are doorways opening on to unimaginable vistas of self-exploration, empowerment and hope for the human enterprise.” — Terence McKenna

The Living Mystery School
The Living Mystery School is both a Mystery School and a celebration of the Living Mystery. It is contemporary , here and now, future orientated, and rooted in the ancient; it nurtures inspiration, creativity, the imagination, an openness to limitless possibility in a multi-dimensional poly-verse, alongside discernment, logic and reason; it values the qualities of life, beauty, goodness and expansion of consciousness, yet is anchored in a compassionate understanding and acceptance of death, darkness and contraction.
The Mystery School is modeled upon the Ancient Greek system comprising of both an academy of tutored learning and an inner esoteric core that focuses upon the Mystery itself; on that which cannot be taught in language, but which reveals itself directly through the immediacy of felt personal experience, with the profundity of a deep knowing, as if you have drunk from the waters of aletheia, from the ‘well of remembrance’. The School teaches according to the principle of paideia, its aim is towards an education of the whole person. It includes the study of key concepts such as that of Areté (reaching your highest potential), katharsis (emotional clarification), eudaimonia (the state of having a good indwelling spirit) and harmonia. The School curriculum is inspired by a modern interpretation of the nine muses, daughters of Mnemosyne (memory); art, literature, music, history, philosophy, mythology, psychology, politics and a science that is broad and inclusive.
At the heart of the teachings of the Living Mystery School is a deep respect for the sacredness of all life, of all our experiences, of our connections to our own bodies, to each other, to animals and plants, to our imaginations, our visions, our thoughts. The Living Mystery is embodied in each and every one of us, in our interactions with the living earth and in the sense we make of our experience and learning, as part of an ever-evolving, changing, living process.
The Living Mystery School will be holding a series of residential schools throughout the year focusing on different aspects of the mystery traditions and their contemporary relevance in active life and in spiritual transcendence, exploring themes of death and rebirth, time and eternity, memory and un-concealment, inner voices, spirit guides, feathered serpents, flying dragons and other supposed mythical creatures, the seasonal changes, lunar cycles and astronomical alignments. The mystery teachings will include techniques of oracular divination, meditation, anamnesis, visionary and shamanic practices. There will be teachings regarding symbolism and occult knowledge hidden within mythopoeia, esoteric knowledge recorded in the artifacts of ancient civilizations, including Egyptian, Sumerian, Assyrian, Scythian, Siberian, Norse and Minoan. For those who are interested, there will be opportunities to explore the teachings to be obtained directly from psychoactive plants. However, for reasons of legality, any practical workshops and retreats using plants will take place in countries that permit their usage, mainly in the South American countries of Peru, Brazil and Ecuador.
In 2015 the Living Mystery School is organizing a series of Tours to Sacred Sites and landscapes in the UK, in the heart of Albion, Isle of Avalon, home of megalithic monuments, mystic moors, sacred groves, myths and legends of enchantresses and sorcerers, dragons and other magical animals, elves, fairies, druids and witches. This will enable participants to immerse themselves in the living landscape, to learn about the ancient and modern cultures of Britain, to practice visionary techniques, to form an alliance with a ‘daimon’, nature or tutelary spirit. There will be opportunities to explore some of the poetry, art and literature of British figures who have been inspired by nature, magic, myth and the muse, from Blake to Wordsworth, to TS Eliot and JRR Tolkien. As a participant you will also be actively supported with any relevant specific interests that you have and, with sufficient warning, we will try to tailor your time accordingly.
"The Mysteries were the last redoubts of Paganism to fall. Prior to that
their adherents were the educators of the ancient world."
S. Angus
“The institution of the Mysteries is the most interesting phenomenon
in the study of religion. The idea of antiquity was that
there was something to be known in religion,
secrets or mysteries into which it was possible to be initiated;
that there was a
gradual process of unfolding in things religious; that
there was a science of the soul, a knowledge of things unseen.”
GRS Mead
“The great philosophic institutions of the past must rise again, for these alone can tend the veil which divides the world of causes from that of effects. Only the Mysteries--those sacred Colleges of Wisdom--can reveal to struggling humanity that greater and more glorious universe which is the true home of the spiritual being.” Manly Hall.
